Spinning Yarns and Fables
*
The Old Man nodded his head
To the children all around
Each one sat there quietly
On their blankets on the ground
*
He spoke of times so long ago
Before everything had changed
Characters that filled his life
And each one had a name
*
He told of fast wild ponies
Days from the old wild west
Struggles of his childhood
When he had tried his best
*
He spoke of fallen soldiers
In a land so far away
Scars that hurt his soul
That he still wears today
*
You could have heard a pin drop
Amongst the quiet hush
He told each story at his pace
There was no need to rush
*
You could see the age within his eyes
And wrinkles upon his face
Never did we know
It would be the last time at this place
*
For way out in a golden field
We listened to stories beneath an oak
He made each word seems so real
We listened as he spoke
*
But the old man wouldn’t return again
We knew he would if he was able
Today there is granite stone
Where he spun his yarns and fables
*
